Scientific Meeting & Dinner ‘Reform of the NSW Coronial System’

Guest speakers: Mr Hugh Dillon and Dr Robert Day

Mr Hugh Dillon is an Adjunct Professor at the UNSW Law School. He retired as a Deputy State Coroner and magistrate at the end of 2016. He was appointed a magistrate in 1996 and Deputy State Coroner in 2008 and conducted a number of high profile inquests and fire inquiries. Before his appointment as a magistrate, he practised law with the New South Wales Council of Social Service, the New South Wales Ombudsman’s Office and the Commonwealth DPP. He was a member of the National Judicial College of Australia’s Programmes Advisory Committee 2007-2017. He was a 2014 Churchill Fellow – his project being to develop ideas for raising coronial performance standards. He is co-author of Waller’s Coronial Law and Practice in New South Wales (4th ed, 2010), The Australasian Coroner’s Manual (2015) and editor of Advocacy and Judging: Selected Papers of Murray Gleeson (2017).

Dr Robert DayDr Robert Day has been Director of Emergency Medicine at Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney since 2006. Royal North Shore Hospital Emergency Department is the tertiary level hospital servicing the northern Sydney region and saw 90,000 patients in 2018. It is a major trauma centre and contains state-wide burns and spinal injury units. Dr Day has been an Emergency Specialist and Fellow of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine since 1993. He is also a Clinical Senior Lecturer with the University of Sydney. He has extensive experience in disaster medicine and was Medical Commander of the City to Surf Race from 2000-2013. Dr Day has been providing medicolegal expert reports for the TMF, MDOs and the Coroner for over 20 years.

6.15pm Scientific Meeting: UUSC Ground Level Dangar Room. Complimentary to members and guests – bookings essential. If you are only attending the meeting, please still RSVP for seating requirements and so we may prepare the Attendance Register and provide adequate seating.

7.30pm Dinner: UUSC Level 1 Members Dining Room. Includes 3-course set menu & beverages $97.50 for members; $115.00 for guests & non-members. Please advise any special dietary requirements.
