About Cunningham
Professor Tony Cunningham is the Director of the Westmead Millenium Institute for Medical Research Centre at Westmead Hospital and the Centre for Virus Research, Director of the Research Network of the Sydney West Area Health Service, a Professor of Research Medicine and Sub Dean (Research) at the Western Clinical School at the University of Sydney.
He gained his MBBS and a BMedSci degrees at Melbourne University and worked at the Royal Melbourne Hospital in various roles, including lecturing at the university, during which time he completed an MD in viral arthritis. He was then appointed Senior Medical Registrar at the Fairfield Infectious Diseases Institute, Melbourne. From 1981 to 1983, he was an NH&MRC Applied Health Services Fellow in the Division of Infectious Diseases at Stanford University in the USA.
In 1984, he was appointed Director of the Virology Department of the Institute of Clinical Pathology and Medical Research and Consultant Physician in the Infectious Diseases Unit at Westmead Hospital, and as Associate Professor of Virology at the University of Sydney until his current appointments in June 1996. He is a member of a number of State, Commonwealth and industry committees and currently Director of the Australian Centre for HIV and Hepatitis Virology Research (ACH2).

About Rallis
Dr Arthur Rallis is a senior researcher from the Corporate and Financial Services Group at the Melbourne office of DLA Phillips Fox. In addition to being a lawyer, he holds a medical degree. His area of expertise includes commercial law, health law and privacy. A large component of Arthur’s practice involves providing advice to clients in the health sector, including public and private hospitals, medical practitioners, dentists and pharmacists. He has reviewed and drafted a broad range of agreements for the health sector.
In the area of clinical trials, Arthur regularly advises public and private hospitals in relation to a wide range of relevant legal issues, including consent of participants, liability and indemnity issues and clinical trial agreements. He also advises the insurer of the Victorian Public Health Sector in relation to its clinical trials program.

Peter Dwyer, who originally qualified in Pharmacy, was admitted to the Bar in 1978. He was the legal officer for the AMA (NSW) from 1979-1981. His practice includes a wide range of health-related areas. Since 1984, he has been a legal member of the St Vincent’s Hospital Human Research Ethics Committee and the Scientific Conduct Committee. He is an Adjunct Associate Professor (Law and Ethics) in the Post-graduate Studies Program in Pharmaceutical Medicine & Drug Development, conducted by the Faculty of Medicine at the University of New South Wales, which includes legal and ethical aspects of clinical trials. He is currently Vice-President of the Australian Academy of Forensic Sciences.
